Getting to Bocas del Toro and traveling back home can be part of the fun of your vacation. Anytime you have to take a boat to arrive somewhere, you know you are in a good place. Historically, most backpackers that get to Bocas del Toro come from Costa Rica (Puerto Viejo) and after their stay, they either go back to Costa Rica or head from Bocas towards Panama City.
Getting from Bocas del Toro (Bocas Bound on Isla Bastimentos) to Costa Rica:
- From Bocas Bound it is a 10 minute water taxi ride to Bocas Town. Costs about $5.
- Next you can catch a water taxi from Bocas town to either Changuinola or Almirante for about $5
- From there you can catch a bus to Sixaola where you can cross the bride into Costa Rica. Here you will need your paperwork including a passport, travel itinerary, and any custom reports they will ask you to fill out.
- After crossing you can catch a bus to San Jose, or travel to other areas of Costa Rica
