
Panama has an exquisite natural heritage and in an effort to protect these natural resources has designated 29% of all land to be set aside for conservation, with 23% of this designated as national parks. This is roughly 5 million acres of preserved biosphere. In these parks you can see Panama’s 220 mammal species, over 954 different species of bird, and 354 different species of reptile and amphibians, including 125 species native only to panama.
Flora and Fauna are abundant, with 10,000 different species of plants including 1,200 varieties of Orchids, 1,500 types of trees, and 687 different types of ferns to name a few.
The two main parks located in the Bocas del Toro province are:
- La Amistad National Park: A world heritage site and biosphere reserve.
- Bastimentos Island National Park: Covers both land and marine natural habitat.
