The Bocas del Toro Archipelago consists of 9 islands, 52 keys and around 200 tiny islets. The largest and most developed of the islands is Isla Colón which is where the capital of the province, Bocas Town, is located. The total population of the archipelago is around 9000 people, with around half living in the town of Bocas del Toro. The area is still relatively undiscovered. In Bocas town you can find many restaurants, tours, and other activities at an affordable price.
Besides the beautiful scenery and abundance of wildlife, there is also a great variety of people and culture. Walking down the streets in Bocas you can hear English, Spanish, Guari Guari ( a mix of Spanish & English with a Caribbean accent) from locals and many more languages from travelers visiting from around the globe. The islands are home to the Ngöbe-Buglé indians, who descended from Afro-Caribbean workers from the English-speaking islands of Jamaica, San Andrés, and Providencia to work on the banana plantations that prospered in the archipelago a century ago. Bocas is also home to many North Americans and Europeans who have settled in the area.
