Paunch, Isla Colon

Isla Bastimentos variant spellingPaunch contains reef bottom and breaks left and right. There are 2 or 3 different peaks you can take off from here. This wave is mellower than Dumpers and not quite as powerful. Paunch has long, “rippable” waves that are appropriate for all levels but it mostly attracts less experienced surfers because it is fun and less dangerous than most of the other breaks at Bocas. The waves can get as big as 12 feet, and hold size well. The bigger the wave, the more perfect the tube section. The road has recently been repaired so taxis are now able to reach Paunch.  Depending on the swell size and direction this wave can be a fun playful soft shoulder to a pull in barrel with workable a shoulder. It is a reef break, so wear booties.

First and Second Beach, Bastimentos

Isla Bastimentos variant spellingThis is a long beach break. The beach has a reef point break, and a beach break in the middle. The beach break is very powerful and when there is a large swell it tends to close out. Generally, it gets much bigger at First Beach than any of the other breaks (except Silver Backs), so when the other breaks are only a 1-3 feet, you typically can get fun 4-6 foot beach break surf here.

Carenero Cay, Northern tip

Isla Bastimentos variant spellingThis is a reef with three different sections. Which section breaks the best depends on the swell direction. Surfing this beach can be a little dangerous because there are many coral reefs close to the waves. Here there is a left hand reef bottom point break that breaks on the outside of a round shaped reef and wraps along the edge of the reef for a ride about 200 yards long. The wave is powerful and pitches some very long tube sections. When conditions are perfect you can expect 5 to 6 second tube rides.

Silverback

Isla Bastimentos variant spellingThis is a right hand big wave reef bottom point break, breaking out in the deep ocean, but close to an outer island, about a 30 minute boat ride from Bocas. You have to be committed to make this wave, there’s no turning back over this lip. The wind, tide and swell direction have to come together to make this spot fire. Its usually an airdrop to to a thick lipped barrel that spits. The wave breaks on most swells. When the other spots are 6 to 7 feet, this place can be twice that, and gets sometimes to 25 foot faces.

Snuba Diving

Isla Bastimentos variant spelling
Snuba diving is a new alternative to scuba diving and is the new craze all around the world. It was created for those who enjoy the simplicity of snorkeling and would like to experience the wonders of breathing underwater. Snuba is a unique, patented shallow water diving system, bridging the gap between snorkeling and scuba diving.

Snuba is safe and easy and does not require certification. Even if you have never snorkeled or have only basic swimming skills, Snuba diving is available for you. Snuba is easily accessible to couples, families, children eight years and older, and seniors. It is a great way for a certified diver to introduce non-certified partners to the underwater breathing experience.

Snuba divers breathe underwater by means of a 20 foot air line which is connected to a standard scuba tank. The tank is mounted on a raft on the surface that follows your every movement. The airline allows you to tour underwater near the bottom, at mid-water or on the surface depending on your level of comfort. There is no heavy diving gear. Every Snuba tour is guided by a diving professional. Your guide will familiarize you with the Snuba equipment you will be using and briefly describe what you can expect in the water.

You will start in shallow water and take whatever time necessary to get comfortable breathing underwater. During the dive you are never more than 20 feet from the security of the raft floating on the surface.
